What You Can Do To Prevent Child Sexual Abuse

Every individual can take steps to create an environment in their family and community where children are protected from sexual abuse:

• Educate yourself. By educating ourselves about the warning signs in an adult, adolescent, or child with sexual behavior problems, we can prevent abuse before there is a victim to heal or an offender to punish. (see Prevent Child Sexual Abuse: Facts About Those Who Might Commit It or other Stop It Now! publications).

• Talk about it. Learn how to ask questions that get people discussing issues related to sexual abuse – including appropriate boundaries, risky behaviors, or the social influences that create an environment that sexualizes children. See “Let’s Talk: Adults Talking to Adults About Child Sexual Abuse.”

• Spread the word. Refer others to our Helpline (1.888.PREVENT) and our website, www.stopitnow.org

• Share our information with your online social network. Link to our website on your webpage or blog.

• Share our Helpline brochure or Safety Plan with your faith community, school, parents group or other community organization. These resources and other prevention tools are available on our publications page to download and distribute.

• Distribute our guidebooks at your organization, doctor's office or community center. They are available at low cost from Safer Society Press.

• Share your story. Child sexual abuse thrives in a atmosphere of secrecy. Letting others know how you and your family have overcome and healed from sexual abuse gives hope to others. See Stories of Hope for details and email pub-ed@stopitnow.org with your story.

• Get updates. Subscribe to our email lists and get our monthly e-newsletter, Stop It Now! NEWS, and other specialized alerts.

• Get connected! Contact us to find other individuals and organizations in your community that are working on prevention.

• Bring Stop It Now! to your community. Email us at field-devt@stopitnow.org. to find out about bringing Stop It Now! to do a training in your community. Learn about our community-based programs and the work they do to galvanize support for prevention in their local area.

• Find out about your local policies about child sexual abuse. Read our policy updates and talk to your local leaders about your concerns. Email us at policy@stopitnow.org to learn more.

• Get Help. Call the Stop It Now! Helpline (1.888.PREVENT) to find out what resources are available or how to reach out for help from professionals in your area.

• Support Prevention Efforts. Make a donation or host a Stop It Now! event. Email fund-devt@stopitnow.org for more information.
